Liposuction Q & A

What is liposuction?

Liposuction is a surgical fat-reduction procedure that reshapes your body and eliminates stubborn deposits of fat. You can get the procedure by itself or in conjunction with other cosmetic procedures, like a face-lift, neck lift, or breast augmentation. If you choose to get a breast augmentation, the surgeon can transfer fat from your liposuction into your breasts.

Alternatively, you can talk to your surgeon about transferring the fat from your liposuction procedure to your buttocks, hips, or other areas to make your body more shapely or proportionate.

During a liposuction procedure, the team gives you either general or local anesthesia to ensure that you don’t feel pain or discomfort. Your surgeon begins by making a small incision in your treatment area and inserting a thin tube, called a cannula, into it. They move the tube around to loosen your fat and detach it from surrounding tissues.

Finally, your surgeon attaches a suctioning vacuum instrument or a syringe to the cannula to suck out the loosened fat. The area may swell and accumulate fluid for some time as you recover, but you’ll see a notable difference after this subsides.

What modifications can I make with liposuction?

You can use liposuction to slim or contour nearly any area of your body. Removed fat can be transferred to other areas to enhance your curves. Patients commonly choose to get liposuction on areas where their fat is the most concentrated, including their:

  • Abdomen
  • Waist
  • Thighs
  • Buttocks
  • Back
  • Chest
  • Chin and neck
  • Calves

At your consultation, you’ll discuss with your surgeon the areas you want to reduce and any you’d like to augment with a fat transfer. They may recommend liposuction as a technique for your breast reduction surgery or alongside your tummy tuck.

If you’d like to slim these areas but aren’t sure about surgery, your provider may recommend BodyFX® or BodyTite® nonsurgical body contouring.

Is liposuction right for me?

Deciding whether liposuction is right for you is a deeply personal decision. At Garden Plastic Surgery & MedAesthetics, your physician helps you review all of your available options to reach your goals.

Many women choose to get liposuction soon after childbirth because of the fat that remains on their bodies. Pregnancy makes your body accumulate more fat than usual to nourish your baby, and it can be particularly difficult to lose weight later on.

If your main intention is to lose weight, your physician may advise you to try nonsurgical methods first and bariatric surgery instead of liposuction if you’ve exhausted your other options.

Liposuction is best used to reshape your body, redistribute fat, and give you a slimmer appearance instead of significantly reducing your size.

If you’re unhappy with your body shape and ready to give surgery a try, call Garden Plastic Surgery & MedAesthetics or book a consultation for liposuction online today.
